Animoism: Flaunt the Animo

Blog Entry"ANIMO SPIRIT" Redundant?Sep 30, '07 5:29 AM
for everyone
It has come to our attention that a certain "La Sallian" has been spreading text messages stating that the "Push the Limit Animo Spirit" phrase should be dropped for being redundant. We appreciate this concern but we just have to explain our side. This isn't the first time we have received this comment, but we are always coolheaded in explaining that it is NOT.

Inboundpass.com has a discussion explaining the word "ANIMO". Several posters from different schools pointed out that the word can mean different things, depending on how it's used.

As evident in our slogans, we used the word ANIMO to mean LA SALLE (we can't use "LA SALLE" in our shirts because it's registered). Now, some might argue that Ateneo and San Beda also uses this word, and that's why at least the "ANIMO" part in our shirts is green, to symbolize La Salle (if not, the actual shirt or the background is green). Ateneo and San Beda use the word Animo in it's traditional Spanish meaning but for La Sallians, especially nowadays, Animo is being used to mean La Salle. Semantic change? Maybe.

So there you have it. Our own little "press release" regarding this issue... Oh, and hey, at least admit that the slogan sounds good! Haha... Just playing :p

i think the reason why that lasallian started spreading text messages is because some atenean posted a blog entry over the net about this issue, saying that the line, "push the limit animo spirit" , is grammatically incorrect because of its redundancy. I didn't really mind him/her coz i know that when we Lasallians say animo, we mean it differently... =]

I love the green "foil" shirts, Jad & BJ!!! Ahluvet!

Share ko lang. I actually grew up with "ANIMO" ingrained in my brain [SBC High then DLSU]. For us, back in HS, it meant "courage," or "go." The word's usage is more like a verb [well, latin verb siya actually]. DLSU uses it the same way.

And it is also a matter of collective consciousness that shapes the meaning of a word. Like bienvenue in Paris is "welcome" but somewhere in Canada, it is "you're welcome" [a courteous reply to "thank you"].

So there... ;-)

I remember SBC also uses ADELANTE SAN BEDA [adelante, Spanish for "forward"]. Effort sabihin so di masyado popular. Hehehe.

I think it's how ANIMO translates to us LA SALLIANS that matters and I HAVE THE SHIRT, I AM PROUD TO WEAR IT and to me---ANIMO means LA SALLE! Seriously.

All the other people are just insecure because the shirts designs are way too fabulous they simply had to find fault in it. Jeez.

KEEP UP THE GOOD JOB GUYS!!!!

Yeah! Based on what I've learned in Zobel and now in DLSU, "Animo" can be interpreted in different ways - the bottom line is that it's about being passionate. Jeez, sometimes people take things too literally...

It's poetry. It's art. It shouldn't be treated so technically.

hey animoism, i have a suggestion. "La Salle" is not copyrighted by DLSP because it is a name. if people are really bashing you because of this redundancy , you can use this: "PUSH THE LIMIT, LA SALLE SPIRIT". Just a suggestion. ;)
exigent wrote on Oct 2, '07, edited on Oct 2, '07
^ "PUSH THE LIMIT, LA SALLIAN SPIRIT" also sounds good.

not that i agree to the suggestion that the original is redundant. hehe.

it's like the word "salvage," which has a different meaning here and abroad. and the fact that we adapted animo to mean la salle just can't be understood by most.

TAEneans. HAHA :))

new suggestion:

"ONE WHO'S APT MUST BE FROM TAFT"

"WE DON'T CARE ABOUT THE CRITICISM, WE BELIEVE IN ANIMOISM!"

HAHAHA
katmen08 wrote on Oct 2, '07
yep!! go zobelers!!! super loyal tayo!! i think that what i learned in our high school was that ANIMO means "long live the spirit".. but it all depends on what understanding and interpretation we would like the word, ANIMO to have. i mean, it all depends on us, lasallians, or maybe, others too.. well, well, it is only us, ourselves, who raelly knows the real meaning of what ANIMO is.haha...

yep! zobel won too! in the uaap juniors championship last saturday! this shows that lasallians are really damn good!!
krazor9 wrote on Oct 2, '07, edited on Oct 2, '07
Ah... so animo pala means La Salle? But how come you cheer "Animo La Salle"? So is that "La Salle La Salle"? Or you mean animo differently again? Tsk tsk. I think you better come up with a stronger argument to salvage yourselves from this "redundancy" issue.

And for those people who spell Ateneans as TAEneans, I think it's not only a spelling class you'll be needing badly. A Moral and Values Development Class should also be first on your list :)
stellarnostalgia wrote on Oct 2, '07, edited on Oct 3, '07
Actually, ONE word can have more than ONE meaning. I think if you browse through your dictionary, you'll be able to see that. They are actually pertaining to what they mean by the word "ANIMO" printed on the shirts.

The word ROSE can be defined as both a type of flower and to ascend.
If I shout, LA SALLE ROSE FROM THE ABYSS... would you simply claim that I used the word "ROSE" to pertain to a flower? I think not.

If I say, "THIS IS La Salle's SEASON!".. would you immediately think that I was pertaining to a specific time division OR would you think I meant the word SEASON to enhance the flavor of the food?

Well, that's for you to ponder upon.

...Although I do have to agree with you that no one should spell Ateneo as TAENEO.

...Just as no one else should spell La Salle as AL SALLE or VL SALLE any further as a derisive jeer.

repeating what is said above, one word has many meanings, that's why there are adjectives, verbs, prepositions and all those type of words. So it's just up to the person on how he uses the word. REVIEW YOUR ENGLISH NOTES YOU MIGHT GET IT!

Wrong. As La Sallites, we have to find and accpet the truth. Animo Spirit is redundant. The Brothers are wrong.

We , from Old La Salle. would like to correct this abomination before it is too late.

Please listen to the words of Mendy in this clip "About Animo". Embarrassing but true, only the Jesuit trined Ateneans ("Animo Ateneo!" to them means "Ateneo School Spirit!) and Benedictine trained Bedans ("Animo San Beda!" means to them as "Courage San Beda!"), have remained true to the meaning of Animo. Wrong.

Animo Spirit is redundant. Animo is still very much a living Spanish word with a proper translation. Let us no be deslusional and put our own meaning to this word. Such delusion simply shows the lack of intellectual maturity of young La Sallites.

We , from Old La Salle. would like to correct this abomination before it is too late.

(Circa 1970's). Well, that would make sense kasi, manalo matalo, the important thing is we represented the school, and we dedicate the victory to community, the school..... kaya nga GLORY TO eh.......
